The Lotus Seed is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing yoga, movement and art to underserved populations through outreach programs and continuing education. Yoga’s popularity has increased in the United States over the last few decades. However, due to the high prices for classes, commercial ventures of studios have excluded minorities and low-income participants. With affordable or free classes in Portland, the health benefits of Yoga can be made accessible to more diverse populations.
The Lotus Seed began in 2001 in Mobile, AL and moved to Portland in 2004. The organization was born out of the need to bring yoga to all people. With yoga available at an affordable rate, more students can begin to gain the healthy benefits. Along with the public drop-in classes at the facility, The Lotus Seed has formed partnerships with the SUN program, the Boys and Girls Club, Portland State University, Portland Community College, Common Ground Wellness Center, the City of Troutdale, WebMD and Port City Development to name a few.
Most recently, the organization moved its headquarters to 6 NE Tillamook St. in Portland, on the corner of N. Williams, the bike commuter corridor. Graduates who become certified through The Lotus Seed largely contribute to furthering yoga clubs in schools, outreach in business and in private homes. For the last six years, teachers have volunteered their time to work with children and adults in variable class rooms, conference halls and gyms. The Lotus Seed has served over 1500 students during this time. Through these yoga clubs and outreach programs, The Lotus Seed teachers have touched the lives of youth and adults throughout the city.]]>
With your generous support, we can raise the crucial funding needed to make The Lotus Seed Center a permanent provider of health and arts education to our community. 100 % of your donation will go directly to our non-profit outreach programming.]]>
Our classes are provided a highly interactive and personalized session. We believe all students should receive individual attention during their practice. This helps students to deeply discover the benefits of yoga for their mind, body and spirit. When it comes to yoga, different people have different needs, which is why we offer a wide range of classes and teachers. Each class will focus on yoga postures, breathing techniques and meditation in order to energize and invigorate your body, helping you to work on yourself from the inside, out. With a sincere yoga practice, you will be able to attain a clarified, centered focused awareness that will allow you to live and dance at your highest potential.
Yoga is done in comfortable, stretchy clothes and bare feet. It is best not to eat within 2 hours of class. The use of a yoga mat is required. Mats may be purchased at The Lotus Seed and their are some to borrow as well. All classes are an hour. Please be mindful about getting to class on time and sign in the register.
For a full schedule of classes, please look at our calendar.
With community building at the heart of our non-profit, we encourage involvement through work around the center and in outreach. We can offer a work – trade for membership or there are short-term, single project-oriented opportunities for groups or individuals interested in donating a few hours of their time.
